Fish Foods & Feeders
A well balanced and nutritious diet is imperative for the health of your fish. Lack of necessary nutrients will make your fish more susceptible to illness and can also make them loose their colouration. A diet that contains too much energy, or is given in too large quantities, will cause obesity and can also hamper your fish’s ability of successfully pawning in the aquarium.
All fish species have their own food requirements and it is impossible to create fish foods that are ideal for all possible species. It is therefore advisable that you choose foods that have been especially made for your species, such as Tetra food for the different Tetra species. Some fish species are extremely specialised and will only eat one type of food, while others are opportunistic omnivores that will eat – and thrive on – virtually anything that your give them. The most common forms of prepared fish foods are flakes and pellets. Carnivore fish species will appreciate if their diet is supplemented with more meaty foods, such as brine shrimp, worms, larvae etcetera. If you don’t like to cultivate your own live food, you can buy frozen foods and store in your freezer. This way you will always have a nice meaty snack at home for your fish.
If you are going away for a short period, you can use an auto feeder to make sure that your fish receive suitable amounts of food each day. Even if you have arranged for someone to visit your fish and make sure that everything is alright during your time away, an auto feeder is advisable since it is hard for someone else to know exactly how much to feed your fish and how often. It is not unusually for well meaning friends and relatives to over feed fish since “the fish looked so hungry and begged for more food”. Auto feeders can be filled with flake food, pellets or granules. Some auto feeders can handle several types of food, while others are designed to fit only one type. |
