The required wattage depends on the temperature you need to reach and how far this is above room temperature. Most people need 3 to 5 Watts per gallon tank water, or roughly 1 Watt per Litre assuming the temperature is up to 8 degrees over room temperature. The Aquarium Shop recommends two smaller heaters over just one to allow for margin in case of failure of the equipment.
